Equity & Diversity

FOR 5762 places great emphasis on equal opportunities and the promotion of equity and diversity among our researchers. We therefore encourage our scientists to take advantage of the diverse range of programs offered by the University of Cologne. Information on available programs, workshops, and support services that are financially supported by FOR 5762 can be found on the website below.

female career program (FCP)
Our research unit supports 'The Female Career Program' (FCP) at the University of Cologne. The program supports the professional growth of female researchers across all career stages. The program combines workshops, training sessions, and networking opportunities that focus on leadership, communication, career planning, and self-presentation. The FCP empowers participants to actively shape their career paths, build valuable networks, and strengthen their visibility within academia.
DUAL career support
Building a career in research often means moving to new institutions, and sometimes even to new countries. These changes impact not only a researcher’s own professional journey but also their partner’s career opportunities and family life. To make these transitions smoother, FOR 5762 offers financial support for dual career measures such as advisory services and practical assistance. This support is available to newly appointed professors, research group leaders, and international postdocs, along with their partners and families.
family support
Together with the University of Cologne, FOR5762 offers a variety of services to support parents and caregivers.

For those with children, this includes financial support for childcare costs, contributions towards travel expenses for children and companions, mobile children’s room equipment (KidsBox), childcare during events, and even an emergency backup service. Expectant and current parents can also take part in workshops and information sessions for practical guidance and exchange.

Members who care for relatives alongside their academic work can also benefit from tailored support. To help, we provide individual advice on organizing care, information on local support options, and details about flexible working arrangements. In addition, the university offers practical assistance such as backup solutions and placement services for urgent or ongoing needs.
First generation doctorate mentoring+
With First Generation Doctorate Mentoring+ we want to support doctoral students who are the first in their families to take this path. The program pairs students with mentors who understand the unique challenges of navigating academia without a family roadmap. It’s a space for encouragement, honest conversations, and practical advice — whether that’s about research, career choices, or simply managing the ups and downs of doctoral life. With mentors who’ve walked the journey before, students can build confidence, skills, and connections that make the road ahead feel less lonely and more achievable.
Researchers with a disability, a chronic or a mental illness
If you are dealing with a chronic illness, disability, or mental health condition, we know that balancing research and daily tasks can be especially challenging. To ease some of that pressure, our research unit can help cover the costs of hiring a student assistant (SHK) for up to 15 hours per week, for a limited period of time. This way, routine tasks can be delegated, giving you more space and energy to focus on your research.
Sensitization measures
To strengthen awareness for equal opportunities, sensitization measures such as workshops and coaching sessions will be organized. All employees are welcome to take part and to contribute their own ideas for topics or formats. The aim is to encourage reflection, dialogue, and shared learning, while fostering a culture of fairness, inclusion, and respect across the workplace.
